What to consider when hiring a comedian

My friend once gravely informed me that she didn�t �like comedy that�s not funny�. As far as solemn pronouncements go, you might say it lacked gravitas. You might also say it lacked intelligence, insight, and humor .

These immortal words were uttered well over two decades ago, but despite their glib nature, they�ve never left me. They are at the forefront of my mind when, in my professional capabilities, I�m called upon to hire a comedian for corporate events. �Don�t hire someone who�s not funny�, I always remind myself. If I need help finding someone, I generally call upon Funny Guys, who host an extensive roster of professional, well known comics.

Some might think �are they funny?� is the only thing one needs to consider when hiring a comedian. There is, however, a little more to it than that.

Real estate agents talk about location, location, location. Hiring a comedian is about audience, audience, audience. Know your audience and the decision should be relatively straightforward. Is it Grandmas�s 90th birthday? Hold the dick jokes (unless she�s into that sort of thing- in which case, I salute her) Gentle humor from an older, seasoned pro is the way to go. Room full of advertising execs at a corporate event? You can probably afford to up the raunchy factor a little. Suburban sporting club fundraiser? Don�t go with the pale inner urban hipster prone to whimsical flights of fancy. It won�t be appreciated.

It�s always best to err on the side of caution when hiring comedians for corporate events. The potential for the collective office equilibrium to be terminally discombobulated is not worth the kicks you might get from seeing the CEO denounced as corpulent, balding twit by an edgy young comic. That�s not to say it need be dull. Most professional comedians will happily comply with your conditions, so long as they�re not totally misaligned with their personal style.

October 11, 2010, Boston, MA � Greater Boston’s nightlife industry typically spends 364 nights of the year making sure everyone else is having a great time. But for one night in October, Boston’s nightlife industry will celebrate its own accomplishments at The 2010 Nightlife Awards presented by Dirty Water TV and hosted by former New England Patriot Christian Fauria. All the nominees can be viewed and voted for at www.nightlifeawards.com.

With celebrity presenters, musical and comedy acts and more, the awards event-turned TV show will happen Monday, October 11^th, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at the newly revamped Paradise Rock Club at 967-969 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, MA. A special dueling piano show presented by the newly opened Howl at the Moon will be a highlight of the evening.

The event will feature celebrity presenters, including: NESN’s Heidi Whatney, ESPN Sports’ Steve Levy & Barry Melrose, Miss Massachusetts Lacey Wilson, Comedian Steve Sweeney, Massachusetts Gubernatorial Candidate Charles Baker, Comedian Dave Russo, former New England Patriot Troy Brown, former Boston Bruin Bad Boy and WAAF radio host Lyndon Byers and members of the Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins teams. In addition, Boston’s home grown all girl pop/r&b group Jada will perform for the crowd that night.

Dirty Water TV hosts Christian Fauria, Jennifer Manley and the Dirty Water TV cast will host the event. And the honorary stars of the nightlife industry � the award winners themselves � will be featured in two half-hour television shows following the event to air on NESN on Saturday, October 23^rd and Saturday, October 30^th, 2010 at 11:30pm.

A 13-year NFL veteran, Christian Fauria has played for some of the NFL’s best Head Coaches, including: Mike Holmgren (SEA), Bill Belichik (NE), Joe Gibbs (WSH) and John Fox (CAR). While with New England, Christian won 2-Super Bowl Titles (2003 & 2005) and caught the first ever touchdown pass at Gillette Stadium. Christian is the co-host of "Dirty Water TV" on NESN. Recently he became a studio analyst with ESPN3 covering college football. He also contributes weekly to WEEI's "NFL Sunday" with Dale Arnold and Troy Brown and "Patriots All-Access". Christian has a degree in Communication from the University of Colorado. He and his wife Rhonda Fauria live southwest of Boston with their 4 children.
